Bag-and-Bun was named after two flagships – Bag and Bun – the Anglo-Norman Landing, “where Ireland was lost and won”.

The Martello Tower was built long after in the early 1800s; 39 were constructed around Ireland to defend against a possible Napoleon invasion.
